“GreeMko allows for a more active environmental management, as the monitoring is almost immediate”.

Leonor Blázquez Villar, head of sustainability and environment at Bodegas González Byass.

The company

González Byass is a family winery founded in Jerez, Spain. With almost two centuries of history, it produces wines such as the well-known Tío Pepe and spirits. Over the last few decades, González Byass has become a Family of Wine, incorporating other wineries that reflect Spain’s oenological diversity. In 2016 it began its internationalisation, with acquisitions in Chile and Mexico.

Sustainability Plan 5+5 Caring for the Planet

This plan alludes to the five generations of the González family that have led the company to the present day and is a call to the next five generations. Ever since Manuel María González founded the company in 1835, González Byass has been committed to the protection of its natural environment. To maintain this philosophy, they are based on the principle of continuous improvement. An example of this is its certification under the Wineries for Climate Protection standard.

Challenge

Following the principle of continuous improvement, Gonzalez Byass wanted to make more efficient the work of collecting data on the different environmental variables: emissions, energy, water and waste. The aim was to demonstrate the sustainability practices implemented in all areas of the company, from the vineyard to the winery, suppliers, product design and distribution to the customer.

Solution

Gonzalez Byass implemented the Greemko software tool to digitalise the monitoring of the environmental performance indicators of its wineries in Jerez. GreeMko has facilitated the audits, because each data (with its emission factor) is filed with its corresponding register number, invoices and delivery notes.

Leonor Blázquez Villar, responsible for sustainability and environment of the wineries, says that GreeMko “is very easy to use, very safe and reliable; it allows a more active management, as the follow-up is practically immediate.
