Airbus partners with GreeMko in the 12 Challenges of Industry 4.0 programme
The program "12 Challenges of the Industry 4.0″ is an open innovation platform. Promoted by the Ministry of Industry and co-financed by the European Social Fund, it allows collaboration between new generation companies and the main industrial companies in Spain.

The School of Industrial Organisation identified the challenges and searched for startups offering digital solutions. Airbus presented its challenge: "Calculation of the carbon footprint of an industrial complex in real time in an automated and reliable way", for its plant in Getafe, Madrid. The startup selected to meet this demand was GreeMko.
What was Airbus' challenge?
Airbus has been managing sustainability improvements for some time. Its industrial complex in Getafe was already collecting data on its environmental impact, but it was looking to improve quality and efficiency. The carbon footprint calculation had to be comprehensive and detailed, as well as comply with the ISO 14,064 greenhouse gas inventory standard. Above all, it was to help them identify opportunities to improve their environmental performance in order to reduce their carbon footprint.
The other technological requirements were:
- Automated: automatic data capture from any format.
- Reliable and verifiable: in line with the standards of the carbon footprint calculation standard.
- Scalable and real time: it allows the incorporation of new sources or plants anywhere (cloud computing) and the possibility of real-time analysis.
Why was GreeMko selected for "12 Industry Challenges 4.0″"?
GreeMko helps companies to move from reporting to active environmental management. This is precisely what Airbus' challenge was about.
The data provided by the company grouped together several years of consumption of electricity, natural gas, diesel and refrigerant gases at its facilities in Getafe. GreeMko calculated the carbon footprint by scope, and Airbus tested the possibility of exploiting them efficiently. From the results, all kinds of graphs, comparisons between periods or information segregated by emission sources are obtained.
Real-time measurement: everything ready for the next phase
In the words of Mar Robles: "The 12 Industry Challenges 4.0 program has allowed us to make a first approach between the needs of Airbus and our tool, which meets the requirements they were looking for: automated, reliable and in real time". The challenge was materialized in a pilot project, in which the data was obtained from spreadsheets. Jorge Portillo explains:
"In a second phase of collaboration, it will be possible to take the data in real time, from IoT devices, because GreeMko allows the automatic capture from any format".
The conclusions of "12 Challenges of Industry 4.0" were presented on 11 February at the Ministry of Industry. Jorge Caro Terrón, General Secretary in Spain, and Victoria Hernández Puente, Head of Digital Implementation in Military Aircraft, participated on behalf of Airbus. Airbus will have access to a 100% automated calculation; more exhaustive, faster and more efficient.
